5 Ways to Make Times Tables Stick (Free Printable Inside)

Times tables are one of those skills that make everything else in math easier. Long division, fractions, area, even mental math at the grocery store all lean on them. But for a lot of kids in grades 2 through 4, the facts just don't seem to stick. Here are five simple, proven ways to help them click, whether you're a parent at the kitchen table or a teacher with a full classroom.

1. Practice a little every day

Ten focused minutes a day beats one long session on the weekend. Short, daily practice builds memory without wearing kids out. Pick a regular time, like right after breakfast or before screen time, and keep it consistent. A single worksheet page or a quick round of flash cards is plenty.

2. Start with skip counting

Before memorizing 7 x 8, kids should be able to count by sevens: 7, 14, 21, 28. Skip counting shows that multiplication is really fast addition, and it gives kids a way to work out a fact they've forgotten. Say the counts out loud, clap them, or sing them. Rhythm helps the pattern stay in their heads.

3. Teach fact families

Every multiplication fact comes with a partner and two division facts. If a child knows 6 x 4 = 24, they also know 4 x 6 = 24, 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6. Showing kids these connections cuts the number of facts they have to learn almost in half, and it builds a strong base for division later on.

4. Make it a game

A little friendly competition goes a long way. Try a one-minute challenge where kids beat their own score from yesterday, roll two dice and multiply the numbers, or play "war" with a deck of cards where the bigger product wins. When practice feels like play, kids ask for more.

5. Mix it up

Once a child is solid on one table, don't stop there. Mixed review, where facts from different tables show up on the same page, is what moves facts into long-term memory. It also shows you exactly which facts still need work, so you can focus practice where it matters.

A simple plan you can start today

Work on one table at a time, starting with 2s, 5s and 10s, then 3s and 4s, then the trickier 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s. Spend a few days on each, then add a mixed review page. Keep sessions short and celebrate progress.

If you'd like everything ready to print, the Multiplication Mastery Pack walks through every table from 1 to 12 with practice pages, mixed review and answer keys. Want division too? The Multiplication + Division Bundle covers both for one low price.
